SJEA/School Board Round Table Discussions
SJEA would like to give you an opportunity to ask questions and talk to our school board members one on one. We are having our first Round Table discussion on November 6 right after the SJEA EXEC Board Meeting at the SJEA Office, 1333 South Dixie Highway. Carla Wright has agreed to be our first Round Table participant. Each of the five meetings will be with a different School Board Member. We truly believe that this will give them an insight into the concerns of teachers. It will also give you an opportunity to be heard. Put November 6 on your calendar and join us at 5:30 for our first Round Table. Refreshments will be served.
FEA DELEGATE ASSEMBLY
The Delegate Assembly will be held in Orlando next Thursday - Saturday. Delegates from all over the state will meet and do the business of FEA. We will vote on matters that will directly affect education in Florida. We will also discuss and set policy for Florida education as well. I will try to do my weekly notes from the floor of the Delegate Assembly. If you do not hear from me, you know that it wasn't possible.
ONE LAST PLEA!
SJEA needs more people to walk or phone bank on Saturday. You will be updating lists, addresses and names, of union members only. We will meet at the office at 2:00 and finish up around 5:00. SJEA PAC will buy refreshments at Chili's after the walk. It is supposed to be mid 80's and beautiful. Come on out and support SJEA. Support your union!!!

WORKS 4 ME
Attendance Pictures From Lisa Bracker (lisabocd@aol.com), a fifth grade teacher in Palatine, Illinois: "On the first day of school, I take each student's photo and print out a 2 inches by 1.5 inches picture. I glue the student's name and class number on the bottom of the picture, laminate it and attach a magnet to the back. On the front board, I write the class numbers and space them out so the pictures can fit on top of the numbers. As students come into the class each morning, they place their pictures on the magnetic board. They also place a post it flag indicating if they are purchasing a hot lunch. There are different color flags for different lunch choices. Lunch count and attendance are taken care of right away, without any time taken from the morning. I can also see at a glance who is absent, because they are the only pictures left that are not displayed on the board. Subs love this because they can see who the kids are!" » Comment on This Tip » More Managing Attendance Tips Absent Bags From Jennifer Penna (jpenna@nburlington.com), a teacher at Northern Burlington County Regional High School in Columbus, New Jersey: "I have different colored gift bags for each class on hooks. When a student is absent, I put that student's name on the work for that day. I place the work in the appropriate class Absent Bag. When the student comes to school the next day, he brings the bag to his seat, gets the work, and returns the bag to the hook. My co-teacher and I like to make the joke that we love giving presents to our absent students!" » Comment on This Tip » More Managing Attendance Tips
